10 Things About Me
I recently realised that when I started this blog I never really properly introduced myself. I know there’s an about page but that really needs updating, I’ve added it to my ever-growing blog to-do list. So I’ve decided that it’s probably about time I told everyone some random facts about me. So here are 10 (plus a few more) random things about me.
1 – I became a mama in August 2014. Clementine was due on July 25th, and I ended up being almost two weeks overdue. I was booked in for an induction but Clementine decided to make her entrance into the world two days before that. As soon as I went over due my mum said that she would probably be born on what would have been my nans birthday and as it so happened – she turned up on exactly that date. My nan passed away a while ago now so sadly won’t ever see Clementine but I do find it a little odd she arrived when she did. We decided to make Clementine’s middle name my nans name. Clementine is also named after a video game character, we almost called her Cambria after one of our favourite bands but decided that would be silly so opted for a video game character instead.
2 – I met Jesse – Clems dad – when we were both in college, and we have been together since we were 18/19, both of us are now 32 so we’ve been together a long time! We aren’t married but we do own our own flat and we now have Clem so I think we are both pretty committed to each other! Our families had pretty much given up on us ever having kids so they were both totally shocked and surprised when we announced it.
Time for the embarassing photos!
Yes we are playing on DS’s in a hotel room whilst on holiday in Crete because there was a massive thunderstorm going on outside.
3 – I am obsessed with stationery. I used to work in Paperchase before having Clem which was a dream. Although it was retail it was perfect, but it wasn’t so good for my bank balance. I used to buy so much in there, I still do just without the rather nice staff discount. My favourite day was a Thursday as that’s when we used to get our deliveries and all the shiny new things would arrive. I definitely miss it, although I could easily open up my own shop with the amount I own. I’ve been obsessed with stationery ever since I was little. I remember buying pencils whenever we went anywhere, I would always have to take a notebook or something with me. Every Christmas or birthday I always got a new set of colouring pencils, pens or colouring book.
4 – I’m also a massive fan of music and films. I have previously worked in both HMV and Blockbuster. Music wise I am definitely stuck in the late 90’s – mid 00’s with Nu-metal and emo being two favourite genres. My favourite bands include Korn, Papa Roach, Deftones, Fall out boy, Coheed & Cambria and Slipknot. I’ve been to Download Festival, Ozzfest, Rock Am Ring, Reading and many gigs. I started out as a massive pop music fan, my bedroom walls used to be covered in posters from Smash Hits magazine. Then as I got older I discovered different types of music.
A lot of that was to do with the types of films I started to watch. Films in the late nineties had awesome soundtracks. As for favourite movies I love anything by David Fincher, Seven and Fight Club are both in my top 10. Christopher Nolan is a firm favourite too. I’m also massively stuck in the 80’s and 90’s with movies too – Clueless, 10 Things I Hate About You, The Breakfast Club, The Craft, Empire Records and The Lost Boys are all films I could and do watch over and over again.
5 – I first dyed my hair when I was 14, despite having very dark brown, almost black hair I bought a wash in, wash out hair mousse in red…it did nothing apart from stain the bath and my scalp red. I then turned to hair mascara! Is anyone else old enough to remember that?! It stank, came out clumpy and was just awful. I was determined to have bright coloured hair and by the time I went to college I had discovered bleach and that began my journey into brightly coloured hair. I blame 80’s cartoons and My So Called Life for my love of dyeing my hair. Since then I’ve been literally every colour – pink, red, purple, blue, orange, green (by accident), brown, blonde and black. As I write this my hair is currently black with blue/faded to green bits. I should really sort it out.
After looking at those photos, it’s weird because up until the age of 14/15 I had really long hair, now I never let it get past my shoulders.
6 – I definitely had a teenage goth phase, and then an emo phase. I don’t think I’ve ever really moved on from those actually. Most of my clothing is black. I am definitely guilty of going for emo hair cuts every now and then. I also still listen the same music – I still know the words to most of My Chemical Romances songs.
7 – I grew up in North Devon, which is a lovely place to visit and possibly retire to. However growing up there definitely had its good and bad points. There wasn’t a lot to do, it took over an hour to the nearest city and if I ever wanted to go to London it could take anywhere up to 6 hours depending on how I travelled. It’s a beautiful part of the country and I don’t think I appreciated it enough when we did live there. We hardly ever went to the beach because although it was only 15 minutes away it could take over an hour in summer due to all the visitors. We now live in Surrey which is a lot better for Jesse and his work. I guess we have now become the annoying visitors when we go and see our families.
8 – I have suffered from depression, anxiety and self-confidence issues since my late teens, and after being diagnosed with hypothyroidism a year ago it’s all gotten a lot worse after quite a few years of being fine. If you don’t know what Hypothyroidism is then I’ve written quite a bit about it before. My weight is something that I’ve struggled with for a while and now it’s really difficult to shift.
9 – Hilariously I’ve got to number 9 without even saying my name. Ky, actually that isn’t technially true but it’s what everyone calls me. My nickname when I was little was Kylie, thanks to growing up in the late eighties/nineties when Neighbours was very popular. As I got older it got shorter, I lost the lie bit and people finally stopped singing ‘I Should be so Lucky’ at me.
10 – Hobbies. Apart from listening to music, going to gigs and festivals and watching films I like to bake, and eat cake. Food in general actually, I really enjoy cooking, and being a stay at home mum means I do a lot. I also like crafts. However I am terrible at starting new projects and never ever finishing them. Netflix is also a favourite, and not just because it has Peppa Pig on it. I also like taking photos, I’m not very good but I try. I have several 35mm film cameras that I like using and we also have a Nikon DSLR which I have no idea how to use but I’m determined to learn.
A few extra facts.
I own a pikachu onesie, it’s possibly the comfiest thing I’ve ever worn.
I am obsessed with stripes. Everything I buy to wear at the moment is stripey.
I’m terrible at make-up and ‘being a girl’ I guess. I hardly ever wear it. The most I ever do is wear nail varnish and maybe some eyeliner/eyeshadow. Again stuck in my emo/goth phase on that.
I think my mum was hoping I would grow up when I had Clem. In some ways I have but in others I definitely haven’t. Having a child now means I can go to soft play, jump around on trampolines and run around playgrounds.
I have never travelled outside of Europe. One of the main places I would love to visit is America , especially LA, San Francisco and New York.
Well hopefully that gives you a little bit more of an idea about who I am. I haven’t gone into why I started blogging as that will be another post.
